10 tips for holiday travel

With the global economy in crisis and both travelers and airlines feeling the pinch, it may not seem like 2008 will be the cheeriest of holiday travel seasons. Airlines have cut flights, raised fares and added a surge of surcharges for everything from checked bags to phone bookings. Meanwhile, many travelers are postponing or canceling their holiday plans to save money.

But for travelers still planning to visit Grandma’s for Thanksgiving or spend Christmas weekend in Paris, the news isn’t all bad. There are still deals to be found, provided you shop carefully and plan ahead. Check out our 10 tips for holiday travel and find some joy this holiday season.

Avoid peak travel dates

At Thanksgiving, Wednesday is the critical outbound “avoid” day as a rule. Traveling on Thanksgiving day proper is often a breeze and more affordable; there are often cut-rate airfare deals on Thanksgiving day.

On the return, Friday morning isn’t bad at all, with each successive day getting a little busier, more difficult and more expensive through Sunday evening. The bottom line: If you are looking for a deal, you won’t find one on the peak travel days. Travel off-peak whenever possible.

Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Thursdays this year, which means that the same advice for Thanksgiving will apply to both of these holidays — fly on the holiday itself if possible, and avoid Sunday evening at the end of the long weekend.

Book early

Haven’t booked your holiday travel yet? It’s time to stop waiting and start booking. Fares are only rising as Thanksgiving approaches, so those who hold out in hopes of a late-breaking sale are likely to get left out in the cold or pay a very steep price for their procrastination. The same goes for the Christmas holiday; book sooner rather than later, particularly if you require very specific travel dates or times. With the current state of the airline industry, it is never too early to book your holiday travel flights.

While many of the best deals are probably already gone, keep an eye on our Holiday Deals section for any last-minute bargains. Be prepared to be flexible with dates and flight times.

Shop around

Whether you’re using booking sites like Travelocity, bid or auction sites such as Priceline, aggregator sites or our very own Bargain Box, comparison shopping has never been easier than it is right now. During peak travel season, casting the net as wide as possible will help you understand all of your options.

For many travelers, price isn’t the only or even the most important factor, especially during the holidays. Thoughtful, deliberate use of the “search adjacent days or airports” features found on many Web sites may also surrender greatly improved fares and travel times.

For more help, see our Tips for Finding Cheap Airfare. Having trouble finding a hotel? Don’t miss No Vacancy? No Problem. For car rentals, see Cruising for Car Rental Deals.

Know your airports

Checking alternate airports is a pretty standard tactic, but at this time of year it can really make a difference. At no time can the alternate airport gambit pay off better than during the holiday crush. You can score on almost every front — parking, rental cars, traffic to and from, nearby hotels — and save both time and money.

For example, a recent flight to Hanscom airport outside Boston dropped me right into Thoreau and Minuteman country very near the peak foliage season, offering a very different experience than flying into Logan. Upon my return, the car rental agent informed me that my flight might be running late and let me hold onto the car keys until we were sure that the flight would take off, with no additional fee. Only at a small airport can you get that kind of treatment.

Also, keep in mind that smaller airports see fewer flights and, typically, fewer delays — not a small consideration during the busy holiday travel season.

Plot connections carefully

When booking flights, check your search results carefully for sufficient time during layovers, and build in some time for flight delays and weather woes. Particularly during the winter months, peak travel times often bring peak travel delays, and your connection is more likely to be jeopardized. Avoiding really tight connections may save you a sprint through the terminal at least, and a really nasty stranding at worst. Also, it is best if you can muscle your flight path into position so that connections are in places less likely to experience delays — specifically, airports in warmer climates.

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:41 am

By Kelly Holleran

A Madison County man has filed suit against an Alton dental practice, alleging the dentists did not properly diagnose him with TMJ and performed a procedure that made his bite worse.

Gene Silveus claims he visited Humbert Road Dentistry on March 16, 2007, where dentists grinded down the teeth and crowns of the left side of his jaw, causing him to have an uneven and unbalanced bite.

In the suit filed March 6 in Madison County Circuit Court, Silveus claims Dr. Terry Ortman and Dr. Timothy Pranger improperly worked on his mouth, causing him to suffer acute and prolonged physical and mental pain and suffering.

They also failed to initially diagnose Silveus’ TMJ and bi-lateral click before they grinded on his teeth, the complaint says.

The two dentists failed to render dental services consistent with Silveus’ needs, failed to adequately evaluate his condition, failed to diagnose and treat him, failed to take a proper history before grinding on his teeth and failed to fully explain the procedure to him, the suit states.

“After assuming the care and treatment of plaintff, Gene Silveus, the defendant, Dr. Timothey Pranger, D.M.D., through his authorized agent, employee or partner, co-defendant Terry Ortman, D.D.S., committed battery against the plaintiff by intentionally grinding down his teeth and crowns on the left side of his jaw without plaintiff’s consent,” the suit states.

Silveus claims they also failed to properly equilibrate the left and right side of his teeth on the same day.

Cash out refinancing and real estate investment

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:12 pm

Opting for cash out refinancing is one method that I would recommend to s?omeone that is serious about building out their real estate in?vestment and property portfolio. You ?are able to take out a new mortgage with a principal that is larger than your current mortgage. Many a person has been able to do this and get a lower interest rate and with the added bonus of getting the? cash? they need for their investment venture.

The home equity that we have in our possession is really the part of our home that we own. This is built by the payments that we make to our mortgage and through the appreciation of the value of our homes. This means that our home equity is often trapped and unavailable to us? unless we take home equity loans or refinance our mortgage. Cash out refinancing allows us to access this equity. We are able to use this cash from the equity that we get and reinvest it into our property por?tfolio.

Broken down simply in? the form of an example we will see how the equity is made available. Let us say that you own a home and that it is mortgaged to the sum of $200,000 and you have repaid a certain amo?unt. Let us say that that amount is $100,000. Then you have available to y?ou a sum of $100,000 for? equity and this is money that can be utilised for your investment.

You ca?n take? the option of cash out refinancing by getting a new mortgage for your home to the original value. This means $100,000 is given to you in your hand for whatever purpose and? you may have a lowered mortgage payment as well. There are many factors that will make this option a ?desirable one for you and you must evaluate the market circumstances as well as the personal situation that you are faced with and the purpose for? which the money is intended.

Interest rates on mortgages fluctuate from time to time and it is important that? this be considered as well as other factors. It ?can be simple for you to reach for the option of refinancing when ?interest rates are low but there is a factor of? the expenses to consider bef?ore this is thought worthwhile and as such a balance is needed in this decision between where it is viable to refinance or not viable as the case may be.

It is up to you to do the necessary research and determine the ?feasibility of the option to your circumstances. The ci?rcumstances on the ma?rket will also influence the ?benefits or disadvantages of this type of refinancing and all this has to be considered in the decision mak?ing process. It is no easy decision to ?decide to refinance your property so ensure that you are fully capable of meeting the payments required and that there is little chance that you will be unable to do so. Only opt for a refinancing plan that meets your budget.

UK Property Market Prospects for 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:42 pm

With the UK property market ending 2008 showing significant falls in both prices and number of sales attention has turned to the prospects for the coming year. Opinion is divided on what we can expect for 2009. Some property experts predict that the market will stabilize or even begin to recover whilst others less optimistically expect things will continue to decline further. For anyone involved in UK property from home owners to estate agents and mortgage lenders the future prospects of the housing market is clearly of great importance.

In a recent survey major UK estate agents and lenders were asked to make predictions for property sales and valuations in 2009. The bad news for home owners is that there is little hope that house prices will recover over the next twelve months. On average it is expected that property values will drop a further 10-15 percent this year. None of the property experts questioned predicted a general increase in prices. For number of property sales predictions were a little more optimistic. Whilst some experts estimate that the number of house sales will fall others more confidently predict that sales will increase by as much as 10 percent.

The above predictions represent the UK housing market as a whole. Of course the market is much more complex and diverse than this. Although the overall picture may not be great there are some sectors and locations where significant signs of recovery are expected. For example there is some confidence that the property market in London will ‘bottom out’ in 2009 and begin to recover by the end of the year.

Similarly it is hoped that the number of first time buyers in the market will increase. The rising property prices of the last decade have left many first time buyers unable to afford to get a foothold on the property market. With prices now falling and a high number of people waiting to buy it is predicted that this sector of the housing market will contribute to a large part of sales in 2009.

Overall although house prices and sales may not increase this year the general consensus from property experts is that 2009 will see the market stabilising. This stabilisation should then pave the way for a housing market recovery in 2010.

Grilling Mexican food is another way to enjoy it. Foods used to be cooked this way many years ago and it was called “barbacoa.” With this Mexican cookery method, victuals was wrapped in banana leaves and cactus leaves and steamed over boiling water in a large pit. If you want to learn how to cook Mexican rations, this is not the easiest technique for a novice! Food cooked in this way would have tasted similar to our grilled food of today. Fajitas are a permissible example of a perfect Mexican food to grill.

Mexicans many years ago used “metate y mano,” which was a capacious tool with a concave surface, made from stone or lava rock. This utensil was used to mash the ingredients together. You would learn about these ancient cooking tools in a Mexican cooking grade, although we use different utensils today.
